Hello. Greetings from Boonary TV. In today's GK topic, we will see, "What to do when there's a gas leak at home"? If a gas leak is suspected what are the do's and don'ts that we should keep in mind? Let's find out. In the month of February this year, there was a news of the death of a deaf couple in Gujarat. The couple Arpit Patel and Dhruti Tailor who were recently engaged died due to suffocation. How? It was because of a gas leakage from the geyser in the bathroom of their house. Many such accidents and deaths occur as people are unaware of what to do when there's a gas leak. Gas usage is common in our household. We use it in our cylinders for cooking or any other electrical appliance like a geyser. How would you know if there's a gas leak at home? Let me tell you. 1. Hear: There are signs such as: large gas leaks can produce hissing sounds, but what if the person is deaf? 2. Smell: You might be able to get a slight whiff of the smell of rotten eggs. 3. See: You might also see air bubbles outside your home maybe in places where there's water stored. There maybe dead, dying or stunted plants inside or outside your home. Some people might also experience headaches, dizziness, fatigue, nausea and irregular breathing. These symptoms might denote a gas leak. If there's a gas leak at home, what steps should you do? Take a look. If there's a gas leak at home and a mild gas smell is present, what should you do? Immediately turn off the gas knob and the cylinder regulator. Open all the windows and doors of the house. Go out of the house and call the utility company. They will likely have a certified inspector assess the situation. If the odor is too strong, leave immediately and take others with you if they're present in the house. Do not open the windows, just immediately open the door and vacate the place. Let your neighbours know if you think they may be affected by the leak – it’s better to be safe than sorry! Report the situation immediately to the authorities. These were some do's but what are the don'ts? Take a look. In the event of a gas leak, there are some things which you should never do. 1. Never search for the source of the leak or attempt to repair the leak. 2. Do not switch lights or household appliances on or off. 3. Never use a phone inside the home. If you have to make a call to an emergency number, to outside the house and make the call. Never use lighters or any other sources of ignition. Do remember these guidelines, follow them and be safe.
