Rego Sensei continues the discussion on the IMPORTANCE of "pure" training methods for skill development but also the absolutely necessity to ensure that in the "purity" the self-defense oriented jujutsuka doesn't lose sight of the realities of combat. Conversely, practicing only in the "ugly" fashion of the real world creates safety issues that don't allow for full-on pressure testing and full technical development. While this particular video was focusd on newaza (ground work), the point being made is a much more universal one. Jigoro Kano, wrote about this same issue at length. Mainly, Kano Sensei's writing speaks to ALWAYS keeping real combat (atemi/striking, "dirty tactics," etc.) in mind even when working in a "pure" training format such as standing or. ground grappling without strikes. Kano noted that, even in his day, it was obvious that some were losing sight of true combat (jissen or goshin-jutsu) in order to win the game. He admonished against excessively bent over postures and other bad habits that would be costly in a real encounter but seem advantageous in randori (sparring). All training methodologies have flaws. The solution is to (1) always keep the end purpose in mind...which for the Jukido Jujitsu is always real-world self-defense application and (2) train in a multitude of training modalities in order to fill in the (necessary) gaps created by other training methods. Video taken from the July 23, 2022 Yudanshakai (black belt) class at the Jukido Jujitsu Academy in Palm Coast / Flagler County Florida, USA.
