Nine trailblazing full-suspension machines, two categories, two outstanding winners - it's the most important bike test of 2020 | Click here to subscribe: /user/MBRmagazine A big change to this year’s test is that we have split it between direct-sales brands and bikes that are available from bricks and mortar shops. So we still have two distinct categories, with separate prices points for each. In part 1 we looked at shop-bought bikes available from bricks and mortar retailers, whereas in this video we're going to focus on the the direct-sales brands. This move isn’t driven purely by a desire to level the playing field, though that certainly helps. We’re convinced that the majority of riders looking to buy direct or from a store, want to do so exclusively, and are actually different consumers with different buying habits. Well, at least when it comes to big ticket purchases like buying a new bike. As such, we wanted to target the test accordingly. MBR:
2019 Jeffsy with 140mm fork and 140mm travel: Felt like an XC bike.
2020 Jeffsy with 150mm fork and 150mm travel: Still feels like an XC trail bike.

@James-yy4vl4 years ago Looking forward to seeing Nino Schurter winning the next World Cup on a jeffsy. 123
  • @
@wilon_rs4 years ago To much talk about tires, saddle comfort.... nothing about frame kinematics, geometry ect. I'm sorry guys but this test is weak. I own Jeffsy. Yes the frame is stiff, Yes it pedals great but calling it XC'ish is weird. ... 81
  • @
@MrZeko3rs4 years ago Respect the reviewer opinion. But how exactly is the jeffsy on the XC side?! Its more capable downhill than my santa cruz Hightower! 38
  • @
@markscott79564 years ago How come I've just purchased YT's "Trail bike" and its called IZZO. The Jeffsy described as XC is laughable. They say they use the same tyres to test all then slate the stock tyres. 99
  • @
@Handjob2424 years ago The previous iteration of the Jeffsy more of an XC bike ... what on Earth are you talking about? 78
  • @
@motobasfan39624 years ago Everyone says the YT jefsy is a mini enduro bike and this guy says it's on the xc side... wtf? 127
  • @
@darknessoftheabyss4 years ago Full minded individuals can obviously use these reviews to know what you do and don't want from a bike I have a bossnut frame but I've already swapped out half the parts to get a better ride that don't cost me the earth in one lump sum. That was due to following up reviews from MBR. Thanks guys. ... 3

@jakewhatling44 years ago this guy doesnt have a clue how to review for the whole market and nitpicks due to his own personal preferences 142
  • @
@stevowyeth4 years ago Like anyone is going to pick one bike or another due to the tyres it comes with, let alone grips. If I look into getting an XC bike in the future I'll check out the Jeffsy 🤣 19

@expanseyt70654 years ago Damn, nice Radon
    Still on that 2012 version.
Been riding it for so long, they should hook me up with a current version one!

@kennyagne29224 years ago i like the stiffer frame of my yt comp, it just feels like a solid bike and makes me want to ride it harder compared to
my Aluminum stumpjumper i had before

  • @
@brettneuberger64664 years ago The Radon looks like an aggressive, pre-21 HeiHei, which I still argue is one of the most underrated short travel 29rs around.....and a hell of a deal! Full Carbon, XT, Fox 34, 27lbs....all for around $4500 US. I picked my green machine up in the off season two yrs ago for just $3300. I saved so much, I couldn’t resist adding a Big Honzo to my ticket for a measly $1100 more. Still Love both!
Direct to consumer is great, but if you’re patient, somewhat flexible and willing to put in a little time, you can often find equally good deals....if not better....at a shop.

@jakobholm77224 years ago Why didn´t you test fx Canyon and Propain? 41

@markbails98964 years ago Love the approach but some odd omissions from this list of direct sale trail bikes. Why no Spectral or Hugene? 20
  • @
@benefiet4 years ago I have commencal meta trail. The wide chainstay is not a problem for me.
  • @
@Jon-nz3dm4 years ago How about ditch this Paul character and just have Alan review consumer direct and shop bought bikes lol. Nobody wants to hear people employed in this industry complain about every little thing because they're used to riding a $7500 bike. Most of us would love to have any of these. Tbh, I'd love to even have rear suspension. ... 23
  • @
@joshdyer94654 years ago Or just buy a Canyon Spectral. Keep an eye on their outlet store, they run deals often. The spectral pedals well and descents amazingly. I love mine 9
  • @
@ianw38114 years ago Too much focus on components. There are tons of individual components, this is a BIKE review, I’d rather have more information on how composed the geometry is, how the frame feels, what the characteristics of the rear suspension linkage is. Each manufacturer makes a ton of bikes at different price points, people can just choose the spec level they want according to their preferences, so stop griping about components. ... 33

@riccardoorian6344 years ago Hi from Italy... have U done a comparison between shop-bought and direct-sales bikes winners ( maybe including the 2nd place)?
  • @
@maxwalker99904 years ago I really like how u guys separated direct to consumer and brick and mortar bikes this year! Is this gonna be a regular thing in future bike of the year vids. Btw Jeffsy ain’t a XC bike haha 3
  • @
@chadsugden4114 years ago is the next sized bikes coming soon? 150mm-180mm travel ?
  • @
@liron0004 years ago You should do a 27.5 comparison where you compare the Bronson vs. Remady vs. Spectral 3
  • @
@joeblack40264 years ago I read in some review that the rear end on radon is actually so flexy that the ruber touches the rear triangle in corners is that something you found as well? YT jeffsy rear is build like a tank .. similar to capra. 1
  • @
@derektaylor28454 years ago Where's the 27.5 bikes at? My favorite all around quiver is the Yeti SB 140. Id love to see a Transition scout, pivot 5.5, santa cruz 5010 and yeti 140 up against the top four of these bikes. My guess is they would equal the times made on aggressive XC or enduro runs. ...

@and30ers4 years ago Radon Slide Trail 29" is great -- if you're <190 cm short, size XL w. 481 mm reach is too small for taller riders. YT Jeffsy 29 in size XL is a tad roomier at 490 mm reach, but Jeffsy 29 also comes in size XXL with 510 mm reach for 192-202 cm riders. Great! ... 2

@Dyoochoob4 years ago Why is the Rose Root Miller not tested anywhere? Looks great on paper.
  • @
@simonarends78024 years ago It's interesting. I have the Vitus in 27.5. never noticed the high bottom bracket. I check the geometry list, and on paper mine isn't high. Then I checked the geo of the 29er and it does have a higher bb and a longer chain stay.
    Love mine

  • @
    @jamesfukndee4 years ago @MountainBikeRider
Looking at reviews for my price point £600 I see the Nucleus bike has great spec, will you be reviewing the new 2020 Carrera Fury with dropper post, air fork with 1x10 gearing shimano deore? The Vitus has went upto £550 where the Fury is £600 but can be discounted to around £540 and has the things that the review of the Vitus Nucleus said didn't have. ...

@esdubya4 years ago You guys just a blasted Vitus for having a high BB and seat tube again that’s too high! Yet you loved the Whyte s150 which also has high BB seat tube stand over. In fact so does the Commencal, Scott, GT that I know of! Why even test these bikes?
One criteria you should have before you even add a bike into these tests is dropper seat post drop.
Why waste your time testing 3 year old bikes?
On a medium for instance a minimum of 160mm dropper spec’ed, that still fits the target height or the rider.
I running a 185mm dropper on my Ibis Ripmo AF, cheaper than some your test bikes and boasts DW link and modern geo!

@williamdistasio93584 years ago I own a 2020 Jeffsy comp 27.5 , with 160mm front and rear and I can tell you right now, it's absolutely NOT an XC bike.
And yes, before you guys rip me a new one, yes I know they're reviewing 29ers here.
Now, my Giant Talon 1, 29er hardtail IS an XC bike and the ONLY thing it does better than my Jeffsy is climb.
    This guy is a dork.

@robertallen65914 years ago It sounds like they just didn't want to have the YT win 2 years in a row. Reason for taking second was lame..."It has full carbon...so we gave the award to the half carbon bike. I just placed my order for the Jeffsy. Thanks for the review. YT is back to back champ in my book. ...
  • @
@geopietro4 years ago Perhaps I missed it but why did you chose the YT Jeffsy instead of the YT Izzo? The Izzo is YT's "trail" bike and the Jeffsy is their "all mountain" bike. Thank you. 3

@RNicknackpaddywhack4 years ago I want to see the tinkerers bike of the year. The best bike skeleton (frame and fork) that can be upgraded to be amazing down the road, new damper, rear shock, new brakes. The “bike skeleton of the year”
  • @
@lux-30014 years ago So the Vitus was amazing a couple of years ago and now it slowly slid down the ranks because the geometry remained the same, and suddenly you find the chain stay length too long and the BB too high...?
  • @
@thoroslin5204 years ago First, I love what yall do and will give a thumbs up!!
Just some constructive criticism: Dive deeper into the bike like kinematics, flip-chip designs, linkage, etc. I just watched your other video reviewing top trail bikes of the year Part 1 and it was much better done. At the end of the day, you can rank any bike you want number 1, and ill respect that but it's hard to accept your choice when it seems to be based on small things. In part 1 video, the presenter went into every detail about each bike and why they were bad and why they were good and I LOVED IT. This video seemed a bit more opinion-based. I may be biased seeing as I have the Jeffrey 2020 comp dune grey so take my words with a grain of salt... I'm not trying to attack at all. Just some advice. Happy riding! Keep pumping out the great content!!
(I have the jeffsy 27.5 with 160 mm front and rear and that thing is an effing mini enduro)

@antrod45024 years ago Agree with the comments below, and reiterate - the YT Izzo is their new trail bike. How come that's not even mentioned? 1

@JacoblBroughton4 years ago Probably should have had more reviewers, this one dude’s personal opinions don’t hold too much merit IMO
  • @
@joshteggerdine5544 years ago To bad its borderline impossible to get a Radon bike to the us without it costing an arm and a leg. 1
  • @
@PACEUK224 years ago Excluding 27.5 wheeled bikes is a big mistake and really compromises the validity of your conclusions. Very disappointing 8

@kylespalding50554 years ago Seems daft to comment on the tire spec when you change the tires for the review.
  • @
@TwoGuysOneVan4 years ago Nice work guys and gals... Liked the format of this. And that Radon is deffo noice to look at... :D 1
  • @
@MrSamulele04 years ago On the Escarpe, yes it has a high BB but really don't understand when he says that it pushes the weight forward because has a long chain stay so it gets uneasy going DH. As far as I know bikes are getting longer wheel base (over 1200mm for medium!) for stability on DH, and we've seen DH bikes at world cup level with chain stays extensions. I have an Escarpe VRX and had 150mm up front so maybe that extra cm helps with not feeling what he's describing. Not sure what the logic is in what he's saying. Also I don't see any of those bikes fitting a 170mm dropper, I see 120-150mm and that's what the Escarpe can fit. ...
  • @
@chrismitchell46654 years ago So if your bike is more than 2 years old it's complete rubbish... I hate these reviews, but still can't stop watching them haha.
  • @
@robhughes6454 years ago Have to agree, this is not a trail bike comparison and is quite misleading as to what's available ... pushing 29ers might be your agenda but it's not what riding trail is about, it's about the best bike, not the most fashionable ... 1
  • @
@mick35w4 years ago Schwalbe are so much better than Maxxis, minions came on my new ransom and they were the worst mtb tyres I’ve ridden, fitted Michelin wild enduros and they are unreal 4
  • @
@mrvwbug44234 years ago So Jeffsey is the best bike available outside of Europe, pretty sure Radon isn't available in North America.
  • @
@whiteknucklemtb75114 years ago YT Jeffsy with Fox 36 150mm travel and he said it’s more like a XC bike????

@hunterwright3864 years ago @mountain bike rider, please give us what some or most of us what to see, 27.5 wheels. Plz.
  • @
@TeamCykelhold4 years ago Ok, so wall of text. I love that you separated this categories in direct sales and brick and mortar bikes. This way to distinguish is great because doing it by price always means DS get better components and BM gets faster service and I feel that in the end you really are either DS or a BM buyer, depending heavily on mechanical skills and if you know what you want already. I think a really good review makes one able to choose a bike based on personal preference. on to the not so good parts. I want information and I love getting some opinions, but I dislike getting outright conclusions if they aren't based on some kind of initial discussion and let me decide if the conclusion goes in line with my own preferences. I feel MBR need more than a single guys opinion on these bikes. This review wasn't the greatest, seems the reviewer just put his personal preferences on top of 4 great bikes and chose the one that suited his riding style most. For example, the frame compliance. So, now we know that often alloy backends are more compliant than carbon, but this wasn't mentioned properly by the reviewer. The correlation between compliance and material wasn't mentioned, and since you can also get an alloy version of Jeffsy why not give the viewer some insights on material choice? Also, now that the Jeffsy isn't a trailbike but an XC bike, is Izzo a gravel bike? Just wondering. Trailbikes are supposedly the most versatile bike, yet it seems the reviewer really caters a very small segment of people who have access to the most burly trails imaginable. Otherwise I don't think Jeffsy can possibly be put in the XC category. I just don't think this review hits the mark. I think it's alright to say that the geo is slightly dated if you feel that, the HA is a bit steep by modern standards or something founded in objective reality, but I feel that just stating it's for XC misses the whole point of trailbikes by a mile. On a technical note, you should try to get a better camera and record/upload in 4k. Sounds is really good, but image quality is potato. Anyway, enjoyed the review for the laughs and it's always nice with a new opinion pieces. ...

@dropclutch14 years ago Did I miss something? Judging by these nasty comments you would think they had to pay to watch this review lol! Thanks for taking the time to make these vids guys, I enjoy them! 6
  • @
@oskarskates4 years ago I feel like you want your bike to be stiff, so that your suspension can work properly. Flex in bikes causes deflection which is unpredictable, rather have your suspension do the work than frame in my opinion.
  • @
@Drogos794 years ago Not enough changes doesn't exclude bike from market comparison. R we looking for good bike or bike that has changed most?
  • @
@cryptocorey85824 years ago Why match all the tires? You could have 2 different bikes ride almost exactly the same but put back on their original tires and the difference can be huge and a price different that is huge
  • @
@Jay-jn3sl4 years ago First you guys didn't include 27.5 bikes in the shop-bought category, and now you call the Jeffsy XC. Please review bikes on a fair playing field instead of nitpicking bikes that you like instead. 2

@lovingitlots4 years ago Music at the start sounds like an 80's porno 😂
  • @
@christielogan4224 years ago Comparing the geo from the Jeffsy to the Capra you'll see Capra is one degree more slack, 10 mm longer reach and there is only a 1 mm difference in wheel base. They also both have piggy back shocks, something you don't even see on many trail bikes, let alone an xc bike, so I think it's pretty unfair to make the claim, it feels more of an xc bike. Also I don't think anyone as ever claimed a bike to be too stiff. I feel like this video review wasn't properly thought through, and it ended up feeling almost misleading. ... 1
